10 Years of House
On the occasion of the exhibit "10 years of House" at Design Within Reach Florida Studios, Scott Hughes described the process and problem solving that goes into our residential projects to the attendees at the opening receptions.
This exhibit, Complexity, Contradiction and Confirmation, offers examples of how hughesumbanhowar engages the design philosophy posited in the seminal 1969 book, Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture by Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown. To them, complexity means the conscious use of ambiguous and contradictory building components to express unforeseen effect. In execution this means reliance upon “the eventful exception”. His text illustrates examples of unforeseen scale manipulation, deviation from established guidelines and expression of unique room functions to make his point of how to create a richer, more diverse architecture.
hughesumbanhowar's interpretation of the text, contrary to popular architectural belief, is that Venturi’s manifesto makes no argument for historic form or themes that typified the global post-modern stylistic wave of the 70’s and 80’s. Clearly the firm’s work of the past decade in this exhibit cannot be described as post-modern. Rather, this design strategy characterizes the difference between the consciously repetitious vocabulary of late modernism and the more idiosyncratic gestures favored in our residences.
